Colours of Christmas ~ Red

Red is a colour long associated with Christmas.  Red is a sacred colour often associated with the Blood of Jesus Christ.  It was felt that holly was a specially blessed with it's bright red berries and this was often brought from the hedgerows and forests to decorate houses.

In 1931 Coca Cola took the figure of Santa (which had developed from Saint Nicholas  A man clad in deep green) and dressed him up in their corporate colours.  This is the figure we now most think of.

Red is a special colour that the human eye actually recognises before it sees the other colours.  So it's striking nature means we are attracted to it.

In Mexico Poinsettia's feature heavily in Christmas decorations and in the next post I'll tell you why!

Another red we associate with Christmas is the red of the robins breast which is actually an orange toned red) and post boxes.  These red items are often included in designs for cards and decorations.
